L&D Professionals - are you starving your workforce at a time when they should be fattened up?
I don’t know about you, but I am tiring a little of hearing such phrases ”Let’s remember these are challenging times”
“This is unprecedented and something never experienced in industry before”
Or, worst of all
“Well, let’s see where we are in a few months time before we decide to do anything with our staff”
It’s not the employees' fault that all this upheaval is going on around us and it’s CERTAINLY not their fault that their bosses have decided in far too many cases, to put a halt to all their future learning and development! Why would anyone take that decision at precisely a time when people SHOULD be having development?
Industry is desperately going to need people who are highly aware going forward to deal with the fall out across the economy from COVID-19 – that I DO know! So why then are many employers deciding to put the brakes on developing their people? As if employees haven’t suffered enough with furlough, redundancy, reduced hours, working from home, etc, they then get a further kick in the teeth by their bosses taking the decision to stop any investment in them as individuals! What sort of a message does that send out to an already demotivated and often disengaged workforce?
It beggars belief…
This is EXACTLY the time that any organisation that TRULY believes in the continuous development of their staff, should be pulling out all the stops to invest in these people. Think about it, people are going to need an unprecedented amount of training going forward. And this won’t be just for skills; this is going to be support and development beyond ANYTHING workforces have seen before. People are in need of coaching, emotional support, mentoring, mental health support, and also the focus on developing new leadership approaches.
All change starts at the top, the leaders in the business understanding that their actions are the ones that set the tone for the rest of the organisation. People desperately need to feel valued and a part of something right now, and therefore the SMART organisations are well ahead of the curve here, they have understood that rather than this be a time to cut development, it’s a time to MASSIVELY invest in the training and development of its staff.
Consider this piercingly accurate slice of wisdom from Eric Hoffer - one of the biggest thinkers of his generation:
"In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists".
Our world has changed, maybe for the better? Who knows…
It's a time to “feed and nurture” the workforce by expanding their ability to think and act differently going forward. They need the support NOW - tomorrow is a day too late.
Do the right thing for your workforce: support and develop them more than ever.
